1 John 4

Testing the Spirits

1 aBeloved, do not believe every bspirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because cmany false prophets have gone out into the world. 2By this you know the Spirit of God: devery spirit that econfesses that fJesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God; 3and every spirit that gdoes not confess Jesus is not from God; this is the spirit of the hantichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming, and inow it is already in the world. 4You are from God, jlittle children, and khave overcome them; because lgreater is He who is in you than mhe who is in the world. 5 nThey are from the world; therefore they speak as from the world, and the world listens to them. 6 oWe are from God; phe who knows God listens to us; qhe who is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know rthe spirit of truth and sthe spirit of error.

God Is Love

7 tBeloved, let us ulove one another, for love is from God; and veveryone who loves is
Or begotten
,
xborn of God and yknows God.
8The one who does not love does not know God, for zGod is love. 9By this the love of God was manifested
Or in our case
,
abin us, that acGod has sent His
Or unique, only one of His kind
only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him.
10In this is love, aenot that we loved God, but that afHe loved us and sent His Son to be agthe propitiation for our sins. 11 ahBeloved, if God so loved us, aiwe also ought to love one another. 12 ajNo one has seen God at any time; if we love one another, God abides in us, and His aklove is perfected in us. 13 alBy this we know that we abide in Him and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit. 14We have seen and amtestify that the Father has ansent the Son to be the Savior of the world.

15 aoWhoever confesses that apJesus is the Son of God, God aqabides in him, and he in God. 16 arWe have come to know and have believed the love which God has

atfor us. auGod is love, and the one who avabides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.
17By this, awlove is perfected with us, so that we may have axconfidence in aythe day of judgment; because azas He is, so also are we in this world. 18There is no fear in love; but baperfect love casts out fear, because fear

involves punishment, and the one who fears is not bcperfected in love.
19 bdWe love, because He first loved us. 20 beIf someone says, “I love God,” and bfhates his brother, he is a bgliar; for bhthe one who does not love his brother whom he has seen, bicannot love God whom he has not seen. 21And bjthis commandment we have from Him, that the one who loves God bkshould love his brother also.
